Dear Families:
Welcome to the new school year. Thank you for assisting us with ushering in the year with the excitement of learning and growing. Starting this year we have a new set of initiatives that will make our students ready for the world of the future. Sit back and imagine what the students who are in elementary school today will be doing nine to ten years from now. In the year 2020, what type of skills will the young adults need to possess to be competitive in the work-force? We are preparing our students for jobs that have not yet been invented. An example today is the creation of video gaming and how it has significantly changed in the last couple of years. This is a billion dollar industry that has impacted the workforce considerably. What we do know is
that there are a set of skills that they will need to be successful no matter what occupation is pursued.
Our students will need good communication skills both oral and written. Students at the elementary level use the writing process to refine and focus their writing. They will be required to present information orally to develop confidence with speaking to their peers. Scattered throughout their program will be opportunities for students to practice public speaking. They will be required to work in teams to accomplish goals and outcomes. This will only be accomplished by building relationships and understanding each individual’s diversity. Acquiring the ability to think creatively to solve problems in innovative ways will make our students competitive both nationally and internationally.
The Common Core Standards information was sent home in the First Day of School Packets. This is set of clear educational standards for reading, writing and math that have been adopted by our state. They have been developed to ensure that every child is given the tools they need to succeed. High standards that are consistent across states provide teachers, parents and students with a set of clear standards.
At Open House you should have received a brochure that explains the specific Common Core Standards for your child’s grade level. The last page explains ways that you can support your child with obtaining these standards. Please take a little time to review the information and feel free to call Mrs. DiMicco or me with any questions you may have.
Your children are our children and we want to make their program of study the best that it can be. Together we will be able to prepare our students to develop the skills necessary for success in the year 2020.
Happy School Year 2011!
